God in his infinite wisdom designed some treasures of the earth to be unlocked at the instance of rain (Gen.2:5-6) and its yield gathered by the softening effect of rain, hence he gave man the former and the latter rain. The former rain for her planting season and the latter rain for the harvest.
The latter rain referencing the harvest time gives us the hope that we are closer to the time of ingathering or reaping the benefits of our labour from the planting period until now. It also signifies that it is time for us to “come again with rejoicing, bringing sheaves with us” (Ps.126:6). It is a season that marks the end of every sorrow associated with the period of sowing.
A far reaching implication of the latter rain to all bonafide child of God is that it signifies the imminent coming of the Lord to harvest the earth and the nations in particular. This calls for a sober reflection to ensure that we do not fail him at his appearance. James was apt in his cautionary note with reference to the significance of the latter rain.
“Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.” James 5:7-9
He saw it as an indicator and sign that confirm the coming of the Lord hence the latter rain flags off the time for us to avoid any form of grudge or ill feeling so as to avoid being found wanting when the Lord of harvest appears at the torrential outpouring of the latter rain.
TODAY, as we hear the rumbling of the spiritual thunder and in anticipation of the latter rain, let us hear his voice also as he declared “behold I come quickly. . . .” let us also trust God for the earth to yield her increase on our labour and toiling of several years. Let it also be a reflective moment for us to eagerly expect the long awaited manifestation of the great Lord of the harvest and as such keep ourselves in a ready-mode to please him at his appearance.
It is the season of the latter rain.
